Letter from the EIC

Dear Colleague,

In June 2009 the IEEE Photonics Society published the first issue of the IEEE Photonics Journal - the first online-only peer-reviewed journal of the IEEE.

The IEEE Photonics Journal offers a broad technical scope in photonics science and technology reflecting the full breadth of the technical community engaged in the generation, control, detection and utilization of electromagnetic radiation, spanning frequencies from terahertz to x-rays.

The Journal maintains the highest standards of editorial quality and fair-minded rigorous review processes, characteristic of all IEEE journals. By making use of a new streamlined production process within IEEE, the IEEE Photonics Journal offers rapid publication of papers on IEEE Xplore. The expanded capabilities supported by online publication also allow open-access and multimedia options for authors, while providing significantly increased value to readers.

The IEEE Photonics Journal has a radically different print format. Papers are published in a color, one-column layout and include a cover page with specially rendered graphics. There are no publication charges up to 10 pages for contributed articles and 14 pages for invited papers, so most authors can publish their work at no cost.

In recognition of the wide impact of photonic science and technology, the IEEE Nanotechnology Council and the Antennas and Propagation, Consumer Electronics, Electron Devices, Engineering in Medicine and Biology, and Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Societies are technically co-sponsoring the Journal.

As the founding Editor-In-Chief of the IEEE Photonics Journal, I am delighted with the interest expressed by the community in the launching of this new journal. I count on the support of a superb Editorial Board to meet the demands of high-quality review and rapid publication.

I invite you to submit your original research results to this exciting new Journal. I envisage the IEEE Photonics Journal to grow into a premier forum for the rapid dissemination of the latest research in all fields of photonics science and technology.
