Journal Information

IEEE Photonics is an online-only rapid publication archival journal of top quality research at the fore-front of photonics. Contributions addressing issues ranging from fundamental understanding to emerging technologies and applications are within the scope of the Journal. In addition to regular papers, the journal offers ‘Feature Issues’ containing a small number of invited papers. Tutorials and Reviews are also accepted. The journal publishes a yearly focus article "Breakthroughs in Photonics". Breakthroughs in Photonics is a collection of invited short reviews that describe significant advances in key areas of Photonics.

IEEE Photonics is published online only. This platform offers new capabilities to enhance the effectiveness of the published articles. All articles are published in color. Authors have the opportunity to submit supplemental material which may include but is not limited to: multimedia presentations, simulations, webinars, etc. In final form all articles contain a cover page with a “graphic” abstract. Authors can also include in the MULTIMEDIA section, supplemental material such as: authors biographies; a list of conference presentations related to the published work.

The journal offers the thorough review process that is a signature of IEEE Publications. To ensure rapid publication, papers are only accepted with minor or no revisions. Upon acceptance papers receive a Digital Object Identifier and are published in the Forthcoming Section on IEEE Xplore. At this stage papers are fully citable. The final published version of the papers is copy-edited by IEEE to ensure higher production quality.

FAQs

Q: What is the typical time from submission to publication?
A: The time from submission to online publication on average is 10 weeks.

Q: How does the IEEE Photonics Journal differ from IEEE Photonics Technology Letters?
A: The scope of the IEEE Photonics Journal is intended to complement that of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters by covering areas not traditionally published by that journal such as fundamental optical science, bio-photonics, novel laser sources and nano-photonics. Also, contributions to the IEEE Photonics Journal are not limited to three pages as they are for a letters journal.

Q: Will my paper be published as-is or will it be professionally edited?
A: Each paper is professionally edited through a new, streamlined process devised by IEEE Publications to suit the demands of a rapid-publication Journal. This cuts several weeks off the processing time without sacrificing the quality you expect from IEEE.
