Role of Editorial Board
Editor-in-Chief
The Editor-in-Chief (EIC) is a member of the IEEE Photonics Society. The EIC has the responsibility to set the journal scope and consider revisions once a year. The EIC ensures the manuscript review process follows IEEE guidelines. The EIC makes the final decision on acceptance or rejection of submissions after they have passed through the review process. Because IEEE Photonics is a rapid publication electronic journal the EIC is expected to play a pivotal role in helping ensure submissions move quickly through the review and publication processes. In addition, the EIC is responsible for the promotion of the journal.
The EIC is appointed by the Board of Governors. The selection process is led by the Vice-President Publications, with the assistance of the Publications Board. The VP Publications consults with the President, and submits a recommendation the Board of Governor for approval. The EIC performance is reviewed every year by the VP Publications. The EIC term is three years, renewable for another 3-year term upon satisfactory review by the Publication Board at least 6 months prior to the end of the first 3-year term.
Associate Editors
Associate Editors (AEs) are IEEE Photonics Society members whose technical specialty areas fall within the scope of the Journal. The number of AE’s and their technical-specialty areas are decided by the EIC, with approval by the VP Publications. The EIC, with assistance from the VP Publications, selects, and recruits AEs, and appoints them once they have been approved by the Vice President Publications and the Board of Governors. The AEs shall serve a term of service of 3 years and may be reappointed for additional terms not to exceed a total of six years. The terms of the AEs are to be staggered, if possible, to provide continuity.
The responsibilities of the AE are: to assign not less than two reviewers once s/he receives the paper in the Manuscript Central dashboard. Because Photonics is a rapid publication journal, the AE will be required to follow closely the dynamics of acceptance of the selected reviewers and find alternates in case those assigned do not respond within one week. Each AE will be expected to receive 2-3 papers per week. AEs will also have the opportunity to propose topics and lead in the editorial of focus issues.
Advisory Board (AB)
The Advisory Board provides guidance to the Editor-in-Chief on issues regarding the scope and direction of the journal; helps to identify new opportunities in emerging photonic areas; networks within her/his own community to bring awareness of the journal; and nominates AEs. The AB also serves in the role of Appeal Board in problematic review cases. The AB members will be encouraged to contribute with a short editorial article on a special section of the journal dedicated to highlighting breakthroughs in photonics describing significant developments in their discipline during a year. The term of service the AB member is 3 years with the option to be reappointed for an additional 3 year term.
